evaluateChalkExpressionNode

Evaluate a tree. Returns undefined when a dependency is unavailable — a ref nothing has published yet, a free name nothing supplies — and NaN when the arithmetic itself has no answer. Both read as absent to a caller that only wants a number, which is what every display site wants; the two are kept apart so a caller that must distinguish "not yet" from "not a number" can.
