The variables the document's controls introduce (D68) — every slider's and selector's letter — while a document is being refined, so a value the compiler never saw (a frame of a keyframe chain, a reader's edit) is typed with the same letters bound that the document's own positions had. compileValue knows no document, so these are handed to it as variables. Empty outside withDocumentVariables.
